Jackpots Start Higher and
Roll Faster As California Joins Mega Millions
Schenectady, NY – New York Lottery
Director Nancy A. Palumbo today announced that California will
officially join the New York Lottery and its 10 partner states on
Wednesday, June 22nd as ticket sales begin on the new
Mega Millions multi-state game with a full dozen participating
states.
New York leads the Mega Millions group in
the highest sales of all participating states with approximately
24% of all Mega Millions sales. California’s addition to the
Mega Millions game means jackpots will start higher at $12
million, up from $10 million, and will climb at a faster pace.
Jackpots for the new game are projected to potentially reach up to
$500 million.
"We couldn’t be more excited that
California has joined the multi-state game. The Mega Millions game
now stretches across the country linking New York, the largest
East Coast state, to California, the largest West Coast
state," said Palumbo. "California’s participation in
the Mega Millions game will increase the population base by over
30 percent, resulting in higher sales, more revenue for education
and huge jackpots!"
California’s addition to the game also
means increased second and third level prizes rising from $175,000
to $250,000 for second prize and from $5,000 to $10,000 for third
prize. The Mega Millions game offers players 9 different prize
levels at only $1 per game. Overall odds of winning a prize on the
game are improving from 1 in 42.74 to 1 in 39.89.
Mega Millions drawings will continue to be
held Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:00 PM Eastern Standard Time.
Tickets on the new and improved Mega Millions game will be
available as of 5:30 am (Eastern Standard Time) on Wednesday, June
22nd and the first drawing will be held on Friday, June
24th in California.
New York will be celebrating the new changes
to the multi-state game Friday, June 24th at several
locations across the State with giveaways and special drawings.

Since joining Mega Millions in May of 2002,
New York has had 9 Mega Millions jackpot winners of an impressive
$626 million. On November 21, 2004, New York announced the winner
of a $149 million jackpot, the single largest jackpot awarded in
the history of New York State. New York’s Mega Millions game has
generated more than $501 million for Aid to Education since 2002.
Mega Millions, formerly known as "The
Big Game", holds the record for the largest jackpot in North
American history, reaching $363 million in May 2000. Mega Millions
launched in 1996 as "The Big Game" and was played in six
states. When New York joined in 2002, it was renamed Mega Millions
and is now also available in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Ohio,
Maryland, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Texas, Virginia, and
Washington State.
